Peter was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, around the year 1 A.D., and was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ.
His birth name was Simon, but Jesus changed it to Kepha. In Aramaic, Kepha means stone or rock, which translated into Latin is Petrus and into English is Peter. According to the Bible, Jesus said: "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven."
Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first Pope.
His feast day is 29 June.
